Energy Storage NL presents energy storage as solution to grid congestion during webinar 'Net on green'
Energy Storage NL, together with participants Ecovat and Giga Storage conducted a webinar as part of the "net on green" initiative. In large parts of the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe, it is no longer possible to connect new solar, or wind farms to the electricity grid. There is no capacity available in the grid to transmit all the power generated at peak times. This is also known as grid congestion. The provinces of Groningen and Drenthe, New Energy Coalition, Groninger Energiekoepel (GrEK) and Energy Storage NL have therefore launched the 'grid on green' initiative in 2019. Within this initiative, creative and innovative solutions are gathered to increase grid capacity.
In the webinar, Stefan Olsthoorn, branch manager Energy Storage NL, gave an introduction to the grid capacity issue and showed how energy storage can play a role in solving this problem. Ruud van den Bosch, Technical Sales Manager at Ecovat, then showed how power2heat and heat storage can be applied to create more demand for the sustainably generated electricity. This allows surplus electricity to be converted into heat, which can be used in a heat network in the winter. Finally, Maarten Quist, COO at Giga Storage, presented the Rhino project. In this project, Giga is developing the largest battery storage system in the Netherlands (12MW). Maarten talked about the opportunities, but also the challenges Giga faces in developing this project.
