Cabinet launches Dutch battery systems strategy
Today, the Cabinet published the action agenda 'Dutch Battery Systems Strategy'. The ambition of this action agenda is to position the Netherlands - and with that Dutch companies and knowledge institutes - stronger in the field of battery systems and (European) value chains. The purpose of the action agenda is to provide insight into what opportunities there are for the Netherlands, what the sector itself can do and what support is needed from the government to realize the ambitions. Energy Storage NL has provided input to the action agenda at various times.
Capitalizing on opportunities
The action agenda sees opportunities for the Netherlands primarily in four areas:
- Battery systems for mobility, goal: by 2030 the Netherlands will provide internationally distinctive battery systems for heavy transport
- Battery systems for grid support, goal: By 2030, batteries with 130 hours of storage provide sufficient grid capacity and controllable power
- Data, safety and testing: goal: by 2030 the Netherlands will be a leader in battery testing for heavy transport and grid support systems
- Reuse, second use and recycling, goal: By 2030, an independent Dutch infrastructure with access to recycled resources
To achieve these goals, the action agenda focuses on: (1) good facilities for the development and scale-up of battery cells and packages, (2) good bilateral cooperation, especially in Europe focus on Germany, (3) Attention to sufficient professionals and (4) a national battery competence center, Battery Competence Cluster NL, in which Energy Storage is strategic partner.
Response Energy Storage NL
Energy Storage NL is pleased that the cabinet also sees opportunities to create a strong Dutch manufacturing industry around battery systems. The action agenda provides clarity on the direction and corresponding actions needed to cash in on these opportunities. The industry organization calls for an action agenda to be created for other forms of storage such as thermal storage and molecular storage as well. There, too, are opportunities for the Netherlands to form a strong manufacturing industry.
