Working visit by Minister Jetten on accelerating energy storage in the Netherlands
Energy Storage NL today organized a working visit for Minister of Climate and Energy Rob Jetten at Giga Storage. Discussions were held with the minister about the acceleration of energy storage in the Netherlands.
Energy Storage Roadmap
Although many applications for battery projects are currently being submitted, the actual storage capacity realized is still very limited in the Netherlands. So limited that the Netherlands is currently lagging behind in Europe. This while energy storage is crucial to provide an answer to major societal challenges such as grid congestion, dependence on Russian gas and the skyrocketing energy prices.
The Netherlands therefore has a lot of catching up to do. The minister is therefore going to work with Energy Storage NL on an Energy Storage Roadmap. Among other things, this will look at stimulating energy storage to address existing grid congestion problems. In preparation for the Roadmap, Energy Storage NL has already presented a paper with the biggest obstacles to energy storage to the minister (see PDF below). This paper was prepared by the Better Businesscase working group within Energy Storage NL.
Importance of energy storage
Recently, the problems in North Brabant and Limburg showed that grid congestion affects both the energy transition and the Dutch economy. Energy storage can help us capture and direct energy flows so that they contribute to stabilizing the power grid.
Hans van der Spek - board member Energy Storage NL: "To keep our future energy system stable, we need all forms of energy storage. From batteries and flywheels to handle peaks in the short term and from heat buffers to storing green gas to provide the Dutch with sufficient and affordable energy for weeks on end. To accelerate energy storage in the Netherlands, the uneven playing field must be addressed, a national storage target is needed, and a universal approach that includes all forms of storage must be developed."
Minister Jetten: "The Netherlands is generating more and more electricity sustainably, often with wind and sun. Energy storage is becoming increasingly important. Large batteries can help bridge short periods of less sustainable electricity. For example, storing energy from the sun during the day and using that energy in the evening. We are working hard to ensure that we can make more and better use of batteries in the future. To this end, we are working with the storage sector and grid operators on the smart use of batteries to relieve the pressure on the grid."
