Cabinet considers requiring batteries at solar farms

Minister Jetten (Climate and Energy) has sent a parliamentary letter about the interdepartmental policy study (IBO) on standardization and pricing for achieving the climate goals for 2030 and 2050. Recently, EZK's annual Climate and Energy Outlook showed that these goals will not be achieved with the current policy. The report presents solution directions to get back on track with the policy goals. The study was conducted under the direction of Laura van Geest and was published yesterday published.

A key proposal from the report 'Sharp goals, sharp choices: IBO additional normative and pricing national climate policy for 2030 and 2050' is to require and subsidize batteries in new solar parks. The IBO's analysis argues that this is a socially profitable measure that could achieve additional CO2 reductions. The proposal is noted alongside ideas such as increasing the CO2 tax for large industry and further standardizing rooftop solar. Energy Storage NL has long advocated the further promotion of storage as a standard in new solar and wind farms. We are therefore pleased that the importance of storage is endorsed in that light by officials at the various departments.

The cabinet will make an integral decision on additional climate measures this spring, taking into account the results of the IBO. ESNL will continue to inform participants about the implications for the storage sector.
