Expert team Energy System 2050 presents final report

Today the expert team Energy System 2050 presented the final report of its research into the future energy system in the Netherlands. The expert team is broadly composed with representatives from among others citizens, science and business. The report was presented today to Minister Jetten (Climate & Energy).

The study calls for greatly accelerating the energy transition and working toward a fossil-free energy supply by 2050. Electricity generation must be CO2 neutral by 2035, and the new energy system as a whole must be ready between 2040 and 2045. Energy conservation is considered an important factor in achieving this. In addition, the role of hydrogen is described as limited but indispensable for sectors such as industry. Electrification will account for most of the sustainability.

The report further emphasizes not only the positive effects on the climate, but also on issues such as education and health in a community. In doing so, the study is emphatically not just technical, but approaches sustainability from a broad perspective.

One of the promising options for energy transition is the use of local energy systems. The idea here is that consumers produce, trade, store and use their own energy. This opens up the possibility, for example, of a cooperative of local residents becoming active in storage projects, as is already sometimes done with renewable generation. The report also emphasizes the importance of social acceptance of new technologies in the energy transition.

The expert team's advice will be considered in the creation of the National Energy System Plan 2050 (NPE). Later this year, the cabinet will present its policy plans in this area therein. Read all of the expert team's advice in the report below.
