Energy Storage Roadmap takes important step for energy transition
On Wednesday, June 7, the Energy Storage Roadmap was published by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. Energy Storage NL discussed this with the Director General of Climate and Energy. The Roadmap was developed in close cooperation with the industry with the aim of outlining a framework for the deployment of energy storage in making the energy system more flexible.
The Energy Storage Roadmap is the result of intensive discussions between the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the sector. For example, ESNL provided input at various times, including during pick-up sessions with a broad delegation of participants. Many of the proposals from the National Energy Storage Action Plan 2023 were additionally incorporated into the Roadmap. The Action Plan was presented by ESNL to Climate and Energy Minister Jetten in January this year.
The Roadmap is a good start
The Roadmap is an important step to highlight and promote the role of energy storage in the Netherlands. ESNL President Maarten van den Heuvel said, "The Energy Storage Roadmap is a good start to developing a policy framework for energy storage. When applying more and more renewable clean energy, we will need all forms of energy storage. Energy Storage NL is therefore pleased that the government has made the sector part of this Roadmap. By acting together, we are setting the pace to achieve a proper transition to a sustainable energy system."
Puts momentum behind goals for storage
An important condition for meeting future flexibility needs is setting clear targets for energy storage. The Roadmap states that this will be further elaborated in the National Energy System Plan. ESNL stresses the importance of accelerating the concretization of these goals and sees an important role in the actions and deadlines formulated in the Roadmap.
The social value of storage for energy transition is great. Therefore, it is important to find the right incentives to improve the business case and achieve the objectives. In addition, a good framework must be developed to fit storage into the electricity grid and provide the necessary flexibility. The industry has ongoing discussions on this with stakeholders such as Netbeheer Nederland, the ACM and the Ministry, for example in the context of the National Grid Congestion Action Plan.
