Response Energy Storage NL fall government Rutte-IV
Last Friday it was announced that the Rutte-IV cabinet has fallen. Energy Storage NL regrets the fall of the cabinet. The umbrella organization warns of the danger that the outgoing status of the cabinet has for the energy transition and specifically the acceleration of energy storage in the Netherlands.
Key steps for energy storage
Under the leadership of the past cabinet, important steps have been taken for the development, scaling up and implementation of energy storage in the Netherlands. For example, an Energy Storage Roadmap was developed in the past cabinet period, more than €1 billion was set aside from Climate Fund to stimulate energy storage, and the National Energy System Plan is working to identify suitable locations for storage. The storage sector is very grateful to the Rutte-IV government, and specifically to outgoing Climate & Energy Minister Rob Jetten, for the important steps taken around accelerating energy storage in the Netherlands.
Downtime leads to delay in investment
The Cabinet's caretaker status and the possible controversial declaration of topics such as "the energy transition" could have major consequences for the Dutch climate goals and specifically the rollout of energy storage in the Netherlands. Indeed, according to Energy Storage NL, the coming months will be dominated by crucial investment decisions regarding energy storage in the Netherlands. The absence of necessary policy incentives for energy storage creates the danger that investors will move abroad. Delay in this process could therefore be very damaging to the Dutch energy storage sector and thus ultimately to the energy transition.
Maintaining speed
Energy Storage NL therefore calls on the outgoing cabinet and the House of Representatives to maintain speed in the climate approach and not to declare this subject controversial. Specifically, it asks that the rollout of energy storage in the Netherlands continue to be encouraged through the creation of the right locations, permits and tariffs, among other things.
