ESNL networking meeting: business case for storage central
On September 13, a network meeting was held in Zoetermeer for the members of Energy Storage NL. During the event, Engie explained its plans with energy storage. In addition, Remko Bos, Director Energy of the Authority Consumer and Market (ACM), explained the regulator's vision on storage and the challenges on the electricity grid. During the event, many participants were present to discuss the business case for energy storage.
Transportation rates important issue
A major theme that returned was transmission tariffs on the power grid. This is one of the main obstacles to the large-scale rollout of storage. For example, transmission tariffs can account for as much as 80% of a battery's operating costs (OPEX). This was confirmed by Frank van den Spiegel and Roeland Manders of Engie, who explained in their presentation that a large number of storage projects are at risk if grid tariffs are not fundamentally changed. Countries around us have previously taken steps to remove barriers to storage through tariffs.
After a break during which there was plenty of networking, Remko Bos of the ACM took the floor. He explained what measures the authority sees to unburden the electricity grid by creating more flexibility. These included congestion management, alternative transmission rights, prioritization and revision of transmission tariffs. Following his presentation, an open discussion took place on the speed and effectiveness of the chosen routes. The meeting concluded with a successful networking reception.
ESNL advocates zero tariff for storage
Energy Storage NL has been in intensive discussions with the ACM, EZK and the grid operators about the business case for storage over the past few months. The industry is pleading for a separate category for energy storage with a zero tariff on transport in the short term, comparable to Belgium and Germany, for example. Discussions are also being held on other ways to stimulate storage, for example through subsidies and speeding up permit procedures. Through the various working groups and personal conversations, we are gathering input and informing the sector about progress.
