GIGA Storage announces large-scale energy storage project in Belgium
Amstelveen, September 28, 2023 - GIGA Storage Belgium announced today that it wishes to develop a large-scale energy storage project in Kinrooi, just across the border near Weert. This 1,200 megawatt-hour project marks another important step in the energy transition and also makes it clear that Belgium wants to take a leading role in Europe in this regard.
Joeri Siborgs, General Manager GIGA Storage Belgium: "This project will be a major step forward for Belgium. This energy storage project will connect to the high-voltage grid and substantially contribute to making the electricity grid more sustainable. We have already received local residents of this new project at an information meeting, as we wanted to be the first to inform them about our plans. We are now submitting the environmental permit application to the competent authorities."
Ruud Nijs, CEO GIGA Storage: "In the Netherlands we have been active with energy storage for a number of years. It's great to see that in Belgium the momentum is there now as well. This project is of the same order of magnitude as our Dutch project in Delfzijl. In Belgium, however, developments are moving faster, which is mainly because batteries in Belgium are largely exempt from transportation costs."
Last week, Belgian Energy Minister Tinne van der Straeten stressed the importance of an attractive investment climate: "It is because of the favorable investment climate that new battery farms are being built en masse in Belgium. For example, battery farms are exempt from transmission tariffs for 10 years and do not have to pay excise duties for the part they feed back into the grid. This is how we make Belgium a leader in energy transition "
