Research and roundtable session on scaling up heat storage

On Oct. 10, Invest-NL brought together leading industry stakeholders for a roundtable session to address challenges within the heat storage sector. The session was led by experts from TNO, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK), TKI Urban Energy and Triodos. The meeting was prompted by several reports published by Invest-NL on Oct. 10.

Paving the Way to a Sustainable Future with Heat Storage

In collaboration with ESNL member Cellcius, Invest-NL has published three crucial reports with the aim of advancing market development and improving proposals in the heat storage sector. One of these reports, titled "Financial Feasibility of Heat Batteries," uses Cellcius' business model as a model and integrates insights from the heat market. It provides valuable insights into the financial aspects of heat storage development, intended for sharing with financial institutions and Dutch developers.

Moreover, the quest for large-scale heat storage projects requires in-depth legal knowledge and support. These efforts have resulted in a robust legal framework, which serves as a blueprint for public law regulations that help companies in the heat storage sector guide their developments with hedged risks and clear guidelines.

The study also highlighted the importance of a deeper understanding of market needs and the potential of thermal storage. Extensive interviews with industry stakeholders resulted in the "Heat Storage Positioning Scan: Discovering Opportunities in Heat Storage," an essential guide for positioning new developments within the market. This guide enables other heat storage developers to explore how to create use cases for their technology where market participants can recognize added value.

Plan of Action Professionalization Heat Storage Sector

The research results and insights from this roundtable meeting highlight the urgent need for concrete solutions to the current obstacles in the sector. Energy Storage NL (ESNL) is taking action from the Energy Storage Roadmap to develop a plan of action for the professionalization of the heat storage sector. During October input will be collected from the sector. This input will serve as the basis for the plan to professionalize and organize the sector. The final plan, detailing the identified challenges and strategies to address them, is scheduled for submission to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) in Q4-2023.
