European energy storage market monitor: Netherlands lags behind, rapid growth toward 2030 expected

The eighth edition of the European Market Monitor on Energy Storage (EMMES) conducted by EASE, the umbrella organization for the European energy storage sector, shows that the Netherlands is lagging behind internationally in terms of European realized energy storage capacity by 2023. In contrast, the market monitor shows that rapid growth of energy storage in the Netherlands is imminent. This growth is so rapid that the Netherlands is expected to be heading toward European top-five by 2030.

The Market Monitor is an interactive database that tracks over 3,000 energy storage projects. The database is accompanied by a report outlining key EU legislation, drivers and barriers for 14 key countries. The report looks at the electric energy storage market and provides data and analysis for three market segments (residential, commercial and industrial and Front of the Meter) with updated project data based on the StoreTrack database and a forecast for 2030.

Key points from the Market Monitor:

  • Demand for storage is higher than ever, with about 10 GW of new installations by 2023, including 7 GW Behind the Meter and 3 GW Before the Meter of storage capacity.
  • The market monitor estimates that the installed base will grow six times in terms of power capacity.
  • Both support schemes and improved market conditions are driving implementation results.
  • The average storage duration of projects is increasing: 2-hour projects have become increasingly common, and 4-hour durations are expected across Europe in the short term.
  • Britain, Germany and Italy are again the leading markets for energy storage both Behind and Before the Meter. The situation is expected to remain unchanged in the coming years.
