One step closer to the power grid of the future - scalable congestion solution
Collaboration between Skoon Energy and Enexis to Fight Grid Congestion through Innovation
Grid operators face a growing challenge as society rapidly electrifies and renewable energy enters as the dominant energy source. This has led to increasing pressure on the power grid, resulting in grid congestion. To address this pressing issue, research Skoon Energy and Enexis alternative solutions.
The need for effective and scalable solutions to grid congestion is becoming increasingly urgent. The current power grid exhibits overload in many places, hindering not only economic growth, but also business sustainability efforts.
To address this challenge, Skoon Energy and Enexis are exploring an innovative solution: a mobile flex solution of battery containers placed on a high-voltage substation. At this pilot site, five batteries were used, each with a capacity of 250 kVA and a capacity of 500 kWh.
The setup is controlled from GOPACS, an advanced digital platform that enables Dutch grid operators to reduce capacity shortages. Skoon Energy, in collaboration with ACC and WithTheGrid, ensures seamless coordination by giving the batteries the right signals to support the grid, for example during peak times such as cold days or simultaneous charging of electric cars.
What sets this solution apart is its adaptability and scalability. The batteries-available through Skoon's independent rental platform-can provide a flexible layer around the power grid to avoid congestion, especially in places prone to seasonal spikes in demand. Installing these mobile battery systems is faster than building or adding weight to the power grid. In addition, a temporary and flexible solution provides opportunities to adapt to changing energy demand.
This systems innovation enables grid operators to proactively address congestion at any level of the electricity grid. From Skoon's online marketplace, mobile energy storage systems can be complemented by other energy systems that provide power generation. Together, they provide a scalable solution even in areas where grid congestion by local or national grid operators limits space for battery recharging.
Building on a successful pilot at The Efteling
The collaboration builds on the success of a recent pilot at De Efteling, where grid operator Enexis implemented a battery setup behind the meter for congestion management. Skoon Energy plays a crucial role in this collaboration through its central role as an online platform and with expertise in clean mobile energy storage. Skoon's AI-driven software platform provides not only access to energy systems, but also the software architecture to reduce grid congestion in a scalable way.
Peter Paul van Voorst tot Voorst, founder and CEO of Skoon Energy, emphasizes the importance of such collaborations: "Our platform provides not only access to large-scale mobile energy infrastructure, but also software tools and expertise to accurately calculate our customers' energy needs. We are happy to work with the grid operator to directly combat grid congestion and promote a sustainable energy future."
This successful pilot highlights the potential of mobile batteries as an effective solution to grid congestion. Skoon Energy's extensive experience in providing clean flexible energy solutions to various industries and customers worldwide makes it a valuable partner for grid operators such as Enexis.
