Successful Knowledge Session on Molecule Storage in the Netherlands
At the initiative of Energy Storage NL and NLHydrogen, 19 parties met on September 27 for a knowledge session focused on molecule storage in the Netherlands. The meeting took place in Zoetermeer and provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss current challenges in the sector and possible solutions.
During the meeting, attendees received insights from several prominent industry players. Nobian, Elestor and EBN shared their expertise, along with representatives from Port of Rotterdam and North Sea Port. Their presentations highlighted the complexity of hydrogen storage and its derivatives, especially on a large scale.
Although the market for hydrogen is still developing, speakers emphasized the importance of timely investment in large-scale storage solutions to balance the energy system and meet future demand. However, the development of both underground and aboveground molecule storage requires extensive permitting processes, thorough safety studies and public support, which takes considerable time.
In addition, the session highlighted the importance of well-connected local clusters. Efficient storage and transit facilities are crucial to ensure the import, export and use of hydrogen and its derivatives without scale-up problems.
The challenges discussed in the sector require a coordinated approach. NLHydrogen and Energy Storage NL are playing a facilitating role in this, with several actions identified. One of the main action points is the concretization of so-called "no-regret" measures to support the further development of the sector.
