PowerField opens 52 MWh energy storage system with Enexis Netbeheer

On Thursday, September 26, PowerField's energy storage system in Wanneperveen was officially opened. During the opening, Jean-Louis Bertholet (CEO PowerField), Ivo van Dam (CTO PowerField) and Han Slootweg (COO Enexis Netbeheer) talked about the project, the cooperation and the importance of batteries in the energy transition.

Several municipalities, counties and stakeholders got to learn more about how the project works and the importance of energy storage during the opening.

The combination of energy storage and the solar park constitutes the largest "co-location" in the Netherlands, combining generation and storage of solar energy. Since the summer, the energy storage system stores generated power when there is insufficient grid capacity available. The energy is delivered to the grid when there is high demand for electricity and sufficient space is available. This helps counteract grid problems.

The storage system has a capacity of 52 MWh, which is equivalent to about 1,000 electric cars. Over 1.7 GWh of solar energy was stored and discharged in September. This is equivalent to the annual output of a 2 MW solar farm.

Grid operator Enexis and PowerField have entered into a unique agreement whereby PowerField has flexible access to the electricity grid when transmission capacity is available. This has enabled PowerField to free up some of the allocated capacity, allowing Enexis Netbeheer to use this capacity for other projects, which Enexis has since been able to make available to other customers.

"We are increasingly facing grid congestion in the Netherlands. This is slowing down the energy transition. At PowerField, we want to optimize our energy flows as much as possible by combining the generation, storage and deployment of solar energy and taking it in-house. With storage systems like in Wanneperveen we bring balance together with Enexis Netbeheer with a flexible solution to the challenges on the power grid." Jean-Louis Bertholet, Chief Executive Officer at PowerField

"Large batteries, with their flexibility, are an indispensable part of a future-proof, sustainable energy system. However, there are also challenges - for example, because it is difficult for the regional grid operator to predict at what times such a battery will actually use the grid capacity we make available. In this project with PowerField, we were able to manage that very well in a special form of contract. Thus, the battery helps both the grid operator and PowerField - a joint result to be proud of!" Han Slootweg, COO Enexis Netbeheer

"We are extremely proud of this project and look back on a great day where we were able to share our vision for accelerating the energy transition with decision makers and professionals from the field. We feel we have a responsibility have within the capacity problems on the electricity grid and the balance in the electricity marketWith this project, we are making a valuable contribution. More such initiatives are certainly going to follow." Ivo van Dam, Chief Technology Officer at PowerField
