Global goal for energy storage at COP29

At COP29 in Baku, it was agreed that countries will step up their efforts to roll out energy storage, this by setting a collective goal of reaching an installed energy storage capacity of 1,500 GW by 2030. This goal and agreements to that end are set out in the Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge. Energy Storage NL is pleased that clarity is coming on the need for storage at the global level and calls on our cabinet to establish this at the national level as well.

Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge

The initiative indicates that the rapid growth of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind is placing high demands on the energy grid. Because these sources depend on weather conditions, storage technology is essential to store excess energy and release it when needed. Smart grids can distribute this energy more efficiently, avoid bottlenecks and increase reliability.

The Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge focuses on the following key areas:

  1. Scaling up Storage Capacity: Invest in innovative battery solutions and other technologies to ensure sufficient capacity.
  2. Improving Infrastructure: Building robust and flexible networks that can handle fluctuations in supply and demand.
  3. International Cooperation: Promoting knowledge exchange and coordination among countries to implement global solutions.
  4. Accessibility and Sustainability: Ensuring that the transition to renewable energy is fair and affordable, especially for developing countries.

The pledge calls on governments, businesses and NGOs to work together to build a future-proof energy system. Public-private partnerships play a key role in this, as they enable the financing and implementation of large-scale projects. It also encourages innovation through research and development, paving the way for new technologies that are even more efficient and sustainable.

Translating into national ambition

Energy Storage NL sees the plea as a powerful signal around the necessity of energy storage in the future energy system. The industry organization is therefore pleased that Minister Hermans supported the plea on behalf of the Netherlands during COP29. However, it is important that this global objective is also translated nationally.

This is because there is currently no "dot on the horizon" for energy storage in the Netherlands. Although an Energy Storage Roadmap has been written, it does not set a clear direction. The development of a national objective for energy storage, which should be part of a broader objective for flexibility, is needed to provide clarity and certainty about the role of energy storage in the energy system, according to Energy Storage NL.
