FlevoBESS realizes largest battery in the Netherlands
FlevoBESS will commission the largest battery in the Netherlands this year. A battery with a capacity of 31.6MW/ 126.4MWh. Preparations for construction are now underway on a site right next to the transformer station of Windplan Groen in Dronten.
At Wind Plan Green's transformer station, power from several local wind farms comes together within a closed distribution system. In December 2024, the FlevoBESS lending contract with ASN Bank. With Eneco agreed to use the battery on a long-term basis to manage differences in supply and demand for renewable power in energy markets.
Collaborative
Flevo-BESS B.V. is a partnership arising from the wind farms XY Wind, Ansjovisstroom and Flevo Ventum. These are wind farms in Eastern Flevoland, part of Windplan Groen. BESS stands for Battery Energy Storage System. By participating in Dronter Energie Opslag, Flevo-BESS can store self-generated sustainable electricity. FlevoBESS is a completely independent company in a legal and economic sense.
Dronter Energy Storage
The FlevoBESS battery is part of battery park Dronter Energie Opslag where a total of three batteries of 31.6MW each will be realized. In this way, the wind energy generated by the connected wind farms can be put to even better use. Eneco will control the battery of FlevoBESS to ensure that at times of surplus the power can be stored in the battery to be deployed at times of shortage. This will make it possible to run the turbines for more hours and use the generated sustainable wind energy efficiently.
Local cooperation
The battery development is an initiative that grew out of local wind farms. In total, there are more than 400 local shareholders, including those living directly around the project. This makes FlevoBESS a local partnership to promote renewable energy. The capacity of the battery is comparable to the energy consumption of about 23,000 households per day.
