Master class Balancing Market Design: A deeper look into the electricity market
On Friday, January 17, Energy Storage NL organized an inspiring Balancing Market Design Masterclass for its members. With Anton Tijdink, Policy Advisor Electricity Market Design at TenneT, as guest speaker, it was an instructive morning in which the 40 participants were fully immersed in the complexity and dynamics of balancing the electricity market.
From European markets to imbalance concepts
During the session, Anton highlighted the origins of European markets and the impact of liberalization on the electricity system. The core values of these reforms were discussed in detail, as well as the various forms of imbalance. One of the key insights of the morning?
Grid imbalance ≠ Control area imbalance ≠ BRP imbalance.
Market roles, reserves and European cooperation
The master class went into further depth with a discussion of roles within the market and the dimensions of various reserves. Participants gained insight into how these elements relate to broader European cooperation. The process of European imbalance netting and the initial effects of the PICASSO project were discussed in detail.
Learning and connecting together
With a turnout of as many as 40 participants, the morning was not only informative, but also a valuable opportunity to share knowledge and network.
