Compliment of the month: Province of Limburg - Energy Storage Study Day
In the "compliment of the month" message series, each month we want to dwell on a stakeholder who in his or her own way is trying to accelerate energy storage. For the month of January, our compliment goes to the Province of Limburg, which organized an Energy Storage Study Day for Provincial Council members on January 10.
Energy Storage Study Day Province of Limburg
The Energy Storage Study Day was organized by advocacy through an adopted motion by GreenLeft Statesman Sol. The purpose of the motion is to inform state members about the developments of energy storage and the added value storage can bring to the province.
In a four-hour session, the State members were taken through Enexis updated on the grid operator vision for energy storage and the incorporation conditions around storage, TNO explained the various energy storage technologies and the added value of each storage technology at the system level, the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth talked about the Energy Storage Roadmap and the ministry's policy vision on storage, and the Province of Limburg explained pending storage applications.

Energy Storage NL was also invited to talk about the opportunities and obstacles of Energy Storage. In doing so, ESNL advised the state members to:
- Identify provincial flexibility and storage needs and embed them in provincial policy;
- Ensure clarity towards developers e.g. about possible storage locations or remaining (residual) space on the provincial grid in cooperation with grid operators;
- Develop a consideration framework that is consistent with other provinces that formulates criteria around spatial integration and is consistent with existing guidelines, such as the PGS37 guidelines
Compliments to the Province of Limburg and specifically to the members of the States for taking a proactive attitude and for being informed about energy storage. I would also like to call on other provinces to follow this good example set by the Province of Limburg. ESNL is happy to think along with you on this!
