Compliment of the month: home battery testing by Homeowner's Association
In the "compliment of the month" message series, each month we want to dwell on a stakeholder who, in his or her own way, is trying to accelerate energy storage. For the month of March, our compliment goes to the Homeowner's Association, which provides insight into practical experiences with home batteries through its Energielab.
The Energy Lab
As an association for homeowners, Home Owners Association is committed to keeping homes sustainable and affordable. In the Energy Lab the association tests new products and services in the field of energy and sustainability in order to gather experiences and better inform their members. Since summer 2024, several home batteries have been installed at 14 households, testing different configurations. These include using multiple home battery providers and looking at the effects of interactions with solar panels, heat pumps and EVs.
This test addresses a wide range of questions, including:
- What is the process of installing a home battery? Are adjustments needed in the meter box?
- How does home battery control work? What role can the home battery play in grid congestion?
- To what extent does a home battery lower your energy bill? And how much self-generated solar energy can you use extra with it?
- How does home battery performance evolve over time?
ESNL: transparency crucial for a mature home battery market
Home batteries are becoming increasingly interesting to many people because they can help lower energy costs and provide more value from your solar power. The market for home batteries is young and dynamic, and many regulations are still evolving. This is why it is very important that there are initiatives such as the Homeowner's Association's Energy Lab, to ensure more objectivity in discussions and better information for those interested.
ESNL remains closely involved in policy discussions around home batteries, including in the context of grid-conscious control and recycling.
