EZK work visit: potential of energy storage for grid congestion

Energy Storage NL today organized a working visit for Annemiek Hautvast, Director of Grid Congestion at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. The role of energy storage in grid congestion was the focus of the working visit.

Energy storage and grid congestion

Electricity storage, heat storage and molecule storage can make an important contribution in reducing grid congestion problems both on the high-voltage medium- and low-voltage grid. Presentations by Novar (electricity storage), Newton Energy Solutions (heat storage) and Repowered (molecule storage) provided insight into the current status of the various storage technologies and the impact they can have on both generation and off-take congestion.

Rural Energy Storage Living Lab

The working visit continued with a tour of the Kleefse Waard Industrial Park, which included a visit to Iwell, which is currently testing batteries at the National Energy Storage Laboratory, established last year by Connectr and Energy Storage NL. A visit was also made to Elestor, developer of flow batteries, so insight was also given to the new generation of batteries.

Storage rollout and incorporation

The working visit concluded with a discussion of the action agendas for high and low voltage grids recently delivered by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. This discussion focused mainly on the appropriate criteria and preconditions needed for the rollout and incorporation of the various storage systems.
