DELTA21
Future-proof solution for southwest delta
DELTA21 is a bold, unique and visionary project in the best traditions of Dutch hydraulic engineers.
Through clever spatial planning, three ambitions can be realized at once: water safety, energy storage and nature restoration. Not only does this mean an important contribution to the National Climate Agreement, it also means that the Netherlands can absorb a significant rise in sea level and that nature in and around the Haringvliet will be restored.
Comprehensive plan for energy, water and nature
DELTA21 seeks the solution to water safety and sea level rise not by raising the dikes, but by draining the water using large pumps. On average, however, the pumps are only needed for this for 2 hours a year. For more than 99% of the time, we use the 1.8 GW of pumping capacity to store and generate energy, and much excess wind energy is still put to good use.
