Eneco

Eneco is an international energy company committed to accelerating the energy transition. From our One Planet Plan, our ambition is to be completely climate neutral for our energy use and that of our customers as early as 2035. To this end, we focus on three climate actions: helping customers become more sustainable, generate more renewable energy and balancing and optimizing the energy system. We invest in sustainable means of production, the possibilities of energy storage and smart energy solutions for consumers and businesses. Batteries play an important role in realizing our ambition to be fully climate neutral and the goal is to develop more of them.

EnspireME in Jardelund (Germany)

Eneco, in partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation, developed an energy storage battery called EnspireME. This Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been balancing the power grid by offering reserve capacity since 2018. The battery has a capacity of 48 MW and contains some 10,000 lithium-ion batteries, enough to store the power of over 5,300 German households for one 24-hour period. Initially, the battery will be deployed on the primary reserve market. In this market, European grid operators purchase reserve capacity they need to guarantee the necessary 50 Hertz frequency on the power grid. The battery can take over this role as primary reserve from coal and gas power plants, thus contributing to the further sustainability of the energy system.

Research local wind energy storage

Eneco and Mitsubishi Corporation are also investigating how local wind farms can be connected to the battery, supported by the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. If there is overproduction by local wind farms or an overload of the power grid, wind energy can be temporarily stored in part of the battery. This can prevent an owner from having to switch off his wind turbines at the request of the local grid operator.

Battery in Ville-sur-Haine (Belgium)

Eneco is realizing a major battery project in Wallonia. With the installation of a battery with 50 MW/200 MWh of storage capacity, sustainably generated electricity can be used more efficiently to balance Belgium's electricity grid. The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) consists of 53 Megapack storage units from Tesla. The battery plant can supply power to the grid for 4 hours. A growing number of wind turbines and solar panels are taking over much of the power production from existing fossil fuel power plants. However, there is not always electricity from wind and solar, the demand is only partly controllable and therefore it is important to have flexible storage. This makes it possible to offer (spare) capacity when needed to keep the power grid in balance. In cooperation with the Belgian high-voltage grid operator Elia, the battery ensures that the ever-increasing volumes of variable solar and wind energy can be deployed efficiently and grid power remains balanced.
