Refurb Battery

Refurb Battery is a Dutch start-up that gives used batteries a second life in circular energy storage systems. In cooperation with the producer organization for eBikes (Stichting EPAC), battery collection organization Stibat Services, eBike manufacturers and technical partners, we have developed a business process, business model and product that starts with discarded (bicycle) batteries. Batteries are collected, checked and used in new battery solutions. These energy storage systems are also designed for circularity. Alternative energy storage systems work on the basis of new battery cells and thus require newly extracted raw materials such as lithium, cobalt and nickel. After use, demolition of the container follows and the batteries enter a collection process, for which there are currently no proper recycling solutions for most battery technologies. Thus, they often end up in the incinerator or in the shredder.

Refurb Battery makes energy storage systems from battery cells that would otherwise be incinerated or shredded in recycling facilities. Each Refurb Battery storage system prevents the extraction of new raw materials. Subsequently, the design of its energy storage systems and their use is set up for circular use. Refurb Battery controls the use of its systems and ensures that the lifespan of each component is maximized. Battery cells are not recycled until they are "completely used up. To ensure the circularity of this business model, Refurb Battery operates its energy storage systems in-house. Solutions are leased and Refurb Battery provides maintenance and management of all modules. This gives it full control over the second life of the battery cells and the maximum use of the other components of the systems.
