Wageningen UR ACRRES
The electricity system of the future will consist largely of renewable energy. Energy from sun and wind is by definition unpredictable and presents society with new technical and economic challenges. On the other hand, the Internet and ICT enable new innovations that offer solutions. Smarter use of energy in combination with ICT is also known as Smart Grid. And that is what ACRRES is working on.
What do we do?
Together with the business community, concepts are being further developed, researched and tested that will enable sustainable energy to be sold better and more cheaply on the Dutch electricity network. Energy production technology meets the economy here, so that more wind and solar energy is produced. Think of storage in power to X as battery, gas, hydrogen etc., grid stabilization, peakshaving, cablepooling etc.
Examples
ACRRES is working with parties on the use of renewable energy in electric cars and investigating the possibility of combining large-scale wind and solar energy with a battery. In addition, a feasibility study is being conducted to connect food industry companies directly to wind energy. The possibilities of storing (wind) energy in refrigeration/freezers or the cooking process are also being investigated. Finally, various energy storage systems are being tested in a (semi-)island situation.
Collaboration
The existing facilities (wind turbines, solar PV, large user, own network at 150 KW, lots of space, good permits, lots of testing possibilities, demonstration possibilities and knowledge economic models) combined with our experience as practical researchers give ACRRES a unique starting point in the further development of Smart Energy.
We are open to partnerships - with businesses, interest groups, governments and education - and new ideas to take the sustainability of alternative forms of energy to the next level and thereby realize environmental innovations.
For companies, cooperation with ACRRES means a favorable innovation environment and the availability over a wide range of facilities, which can accelerate making production methods more profitable and sustainable.
Who we are
ACRRES is a renewable energy application center in Lelystad. ACRRES is part of Wageningen University and Research. Both the province of Flevoland and the municipality of Lelystad support the initiative.
For companies and institutions interested in cleantech technology, biobased economy, renewable energy and green resources, ACRRES is interesting as a source of inspiration and meeting center.
ACRRES currently carries out projects in the field of renewable energy (based on solar, wind and biomass) and investigates the possible applications of green raw materials and cycles.
We do this by:
- Experiment: Together with (new) partners, we conduct application-oriented research to develop prototypes to improve cost-effective ways of sustainable energy production and use of biomass.
- Testing: We provide companies with space as test sites for their prototypes (processes, machines, devices).
- Demonstrate: On its own site in Lelystad, there are plenty of opportunities for conducting demonstrations to showcase current and future possibilities of renewable energy and green resources.
- Learning: Through concentration of activities, ACRRES provides an excellent learning environment (internships, assignments) and information point for (groups of) students.
