Windunie

Do you want to develop a renewable energy project? And do you want to aim for maximum local ownership? Windunie specializes in developing and operating locally owned sustainable energy projects. We always do this together with local entrepreneurs, civic initiatives, (agricultural) landowners and residents of projects. In this way, we ensure benefits in our own region. So we go beyond the commitment to 50% local ownership from the Climate Accord.

"Together you get further." That is the basic idea of the Windunie cooperative. We started from that thought and that is how we will continue. We believe that long-term cooperation leads to value creation and a contribution to the transition to sustainable energy with benefits in the region. Windunie is a cooperative of sustainable energy producers, such as windmill owners, solar producers, citizen cooperatives, owners and initiators of wind farms. Every year, our members produce over 1,068 GWh of clean electricity: enough for almost 300,000 households.

Who are we?

Windunie has been providing the Netherlands with renewable energy for more than 20 years. We are involved in half of the wind projects on land and are generating more and more solar energy. With landowners, policymakers and energy cooperatives, we realize new wind and solar farms. From idea to operation. At the same time, Windunie is working on linking the generation and consumption of green energy ever more effectively.

Windunie connects parties who want to develop a sustainable energy project. In our thinking and actions, we pay a lot of attention to resident participation: we make space for energy together. A successful energy transition is about people and technology. We have smart solutions for that. In 2025, Windunie wants to be known in the Netherlands as the leader in green energy.

Lots of green power

Windunie and its members generate a lot of solar and wind energy. We supply the power from our farms to a sustainable energy company and - increasingly - we help build a smart energy system in which local generation and off-take are combined as well as possible. We are involved in providing green power for approximately one million households. We make space for energy together.

Together for the Wind: expansion of wind farm with solar and energy storage

Megabattery for Hartelkanaal wind farm: The 10 MWh battery - consisting of six storage units the size of a shipping container - has been installed at Windpark Hartelkanaal. This has created a fully renewable power plant that relies on smart technologies to support a stable and sustainable energy system. Within this project, we examined whether the combination of wind energy and energy storage makes a viable business case and whether adding solar energy offers benefits.
