Car as energy storage for office building

A pilot by ENGIE has successfully demonstrated an electric car as energy storage for an office building - also called Vehicle-to-Building (V2B). In the process, the first Smart Grid Charger was connected to ENGIE's office building in Zaandam. This innovative charging station is the first charger that can - besides charging - also discharge an electric car for the benefit of the building. Moreover, solar panels and external storage can be connected directly to the charger, allowing electricity to be supplied to a building much more efficiently.

Sustainable benefits and future

Corporate Housing and Mobility together account for about 75% of a service company's total carbon emissions. Electric driving and renewable energy storage reduce these emissions. V2B technology makes achieving energy neutrality easy and affordable and therefore plays a crucial role in the overall sustainability of businesses. The Smart Grid Charger is linked to the building's energy supply and solar panels. When the building generates more solar energy than it needs, the excess energy is stored in the car battery. This generated energy can then be used when the property has a shortage.

With one charger power 2000 Regular LED bulbs

The car battery can also be used as an emergency power supply and for "peak shaving" at times when the company is experiencing peak load. Connecting solar panels and storage directly to the Smart Grid Charger makes the system even more efficient. For example, an SMB could use a few chargers to run lighting, ventilation and air conditioning on car batteries. One charger can already power about 2,000 regular LED lights.

Next step to energy neutrality

With V2B, ENGIE is working hard towards a future in which energy from electric vehicle batteries plays an increasingly important role in making businesses more sustainable. This creates increasingly intelligent and efficient microgrids that can work together with building energy management systems (BEMS). Using the available energy as smartly as possible reduces a company's emissions and is cost-saving. Jacco van der Burg, General Manager Smart mobility & E-mobility at ENGIE: 'Now that this demonstration shows that this technology works excellently, we would like to offer this system to all companies that want to take the next step towards energy neutrality.'

Unique role assignment

ENGIE connects the car, the Smart Grid Charger, the building's power supply and the solar panels and/or storage and, as systems integrator, is responsible for the accurate operation of the V2B technology. The Smart Grid Charger is from Hitachi and Mitsubishi supplies the car.
