Emission-free set-up and take-down at Into The Great Wide Open

Main results:

  • Construction and dismantling of the festival entirely with electric equipment
  • Charging in the middle of nature despite small grid connection
  • Charging batteries faster with the GridSync inverter
  • Tests conducted that are also useful in the construction and infra sector

Loading in the forest

The organizers of Into The Great Wide Open (ITGWO) are committed to making the Vlieland festival as clean as possible. Greener has been helping this festival, and others, become more sustainable since 2018. Last year we were already using battery swapping, shuttling a battery back and forth to discharge into an on-site battery. This year, we sharpened that plan by also transporting batteries with electric trucks.

This year, ITGWO wanted the construction and dismantling of the festival to be emission-free. This required a whole range of electric construction machinery, such as forklifts and articulated loaders. These machines are clean and effective, but need to be recharged regularly. Every organizer and contractor knows: charging electric equipment takes time and shuts down operations. You need a robust power supply to charge the many construction machines as quickly as possible. But how do you get that done in a remote location with no grid connection? With Greener.

Five batteries, inverter, hydrogen and solar panels

Greener brought five 422 kWh batteries to the island. Two of these were used for battery swapping, just like last year. Because the grid connection at the nearby marina was not fully utilized, we used that excess capacity to charge a battery. Our energy meter ensured that the maximum was never exceeded. The charged battery was then taken to the festival site to be discharged in a second battery.

We linked the other three batteries together with our GridSync inverter. This inverter makes the batteries work together as one microgrid. The inverter also let us combine a hydrogen generator from Watermeln and solar panels from Volta so that together they could charge the three batteries faster. In this so-called "Energy Bar," all electric construction equipment could be charged. After construction, the festival also used this powerful power supply for the many performances.

Festival organizers like ITGWO give us the opportunity to try out the latest innovations and techniques so that we can apply them in construction and other sectors. That way, we can save more everywhere and guarantee a more sustainable project.
