Energy storage in KINEXT flywheel 2
The hybrid energy storage plant in Heerhugowaard is S4 Energy's second operational hybrid energy storage system. The first installation was already commissioned in Almelo in 2017.
With the combination of energy storage in Li-Ion batteries and mechanical energy storage in S4 Energy's in-house developed KINEXT flywheel, the features of both technologies are best utilized. The flywheels take care of the rapidly changing power demands of the Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) service, and the capacity of the batteries is called upon when energy needs to be supplied or stored for long periods of time. Because the KINEXT flywheel system takes care of the rapid fluctuations, the batteries are subjected to less load, thereby extending the life of the batteries.
