Energy storage at Tennis Club LTC Triomf
During the day, excess solar energy from 152 solar panels is stored in a large battery. At night, when the court lights come on, the power comes from the battery. This makes the tennis club the first amateur sports club in the Netherlands with a battery that stores locally generated energy for later use. The battery was installed by StoredEnergy of Schiedam, commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. The aim is to test the opportunities of energy storage for making sports facilities more sustainable.
Chairman Joost Oudshoorn of LTC Triomf is proud to be leading as a sports club in energy transition: 'We have installed 152 solar panels on our roof , all indoor lighting has been replaced with LED and we will soon have LED court lighting. The battery is expected to enable us to run the club on only our own generated solar energy during large parts of the year.'
Director Benjamin Neeteson of StoredEnergy is also proud of the installation of the energy storage system: 'The installation of the battery allows LTC Triomf to maximize its own consumption of solar panels. This way, the club has to buy less power. At many sports clubs, there is a mismatch between the time when solar panels generate power during the day and the time of greatest power consumption: in the evening hours when the track or field lights are turned on. In addition, the battery allows the electricity connection to be reduced considerably. That saves the club a lot of money every year and helps to relieve the local electricity grid.
At LTC Triomf, a 120 kWh battery has been installed that consists of so-called "second-use batteries. These batteries have previously been used in electric cars. Then they can still be used perfectly well, such as for energy storage at a sports club. This extends the life of the battery, which is much more sustainable.
The ambition of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport is to make all sports facilities in the Netherlands virtually carbon-neutral by 2050. StoredEnergy is one of the winners of the Innovation Challenge of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and Sportinnovator and is partly because of this, able to realize this groundbreaking project.
