Energy Storage on the Farm

A six-meter-long shipping container containing 126 lithium-ion batteries has been on De Jong's farm since early 2016. This battery stores electricity that comes from the solar panels. The installation makes De Jong the first farmer to store solar energy in a battery. In this project, he is cooperating with solar panel supplier GroenLeven from Heerenveen, battery builder Ateps Nederland bv, potato storage specialist Agrovent, which supplied and adapted the potato storage computer for this project, and it-company Jules Energy, which developed the smart software for buying and selling power. For the project, De Jong received €2,500 from the Growers Innovation Fund in December 2015.
