Development Sea Salt Battery for Electricity and Heat

Work is currently underway to develop the first Energy-Supplying District in the Netherlands and the first District Battery E+W in Europe in the Havenkwartier Breda. In an intensive cooperation with TNO, Dr. Ten, SEAC, Avans Hogeschool, Aan de Stegge Bouwbedrijf, Cubicco, municipality of Breda, Vereniging Brabantse Gemeenten and SBRCurnet, the Research project Sustainable Self-supporting Urban Smart Grid - Wijkbatterij Breda will be taken up in the period 2017 - 2020.

As an innovation booster, the City of Breda offered the Havenkwartier site near CS as an urban testing ground. Innovative parties are given the opportunity to activate the available inner-city space, without first organizing themselves as a government. DE COOBRAA wishes to take up the Neighborhood Battery idea in other projects as well. Through a partnership with B2Ai (formerly known as BURO II & ARCHI+I) - the largest architectural firm in Belgium - the Neighborhood Battery is being introduced in Belgium.

The "District Battery - Energy-Supplying Districts & Buildings" proposal involves developing the scale-up of an innovative energy storage system, the first of its kind in the Netherlands and, to our knowledge, in Europe. The coupling of heat and electric based on the non-fossil salt is unique. An electric District battery is already in use here and there, although based on scarce (expensive) raw materials such as lithium.
