Solution for lost wind energy

Nuon invests in the generation of renewable energy through wind and sun. Of course, it's a shame not to use this power. 'Use it or lose it' was always the devil's dilemma with renewable energy sources such as sun and wind. Alfen's mega storage system helps to absorb peaks and troughs in power supply and better match it to grid demand. In this way, we are creating more and more opportunities and stability for the use of green power.

3 megawatt storage system at Princess Alexia Wind Farm

Together with BMW and Nuon, Alfen launched the 3 megawatt super battery at the Prinses Alexia Wind Farm in Zeewolde on Wednesday, June 28. The system will be expanded to 12 megawatts in the near future, making this the largest storage project in the Netherlands.

With the project at Princess Alexia Wind Farm, Nuon and parent company Vattenfall are taking an important step forward in achieving their renewable ambition to be climate neutral by 2050. Project manager Boudewijn Tjeertes of Nuon says: "With this we can finally use sustainably generated energy flexibly and nothing is wasted any more. And we are thinking further: for example, we are also making plans to place a battery in a residential area where there are many houses with solar panels. That way, the neighborhood residents can also use their solar energy generated during the day when they get home and want to charge the car at night. Because now that is still often done with gray power, because it is dark then."

BMW batteries

Alfen has made its energy storage system suitable for BMW batteries for its partnership with Nuon. Andreas Plenk, responsible for global sales of energy storage systems at Alfen: "Our system is suitable for working with multiple types of batteries. The excellent cooperation with both Nuon and BMW made it possible to realize this innovative system in a short time. Moreover, with its modular design, the system is easy to scale up for future expansion."
