- The project is financed by Triodos Bank and the National Green Fund.
SemperPower is proud to announce that it is entering the realization phase of its second large-scale energy storage project: Project Castor. This battery system, with an output of 30 megawatts and a capacity of 63 megawatt hours, when commissioned in the spring of 2023, will be the largest battery project of the Netherlands, and one of the largest in Northwestern Europe.
The 30 MW/ 63 MWh battery system will be used on a long-term basis to power the
overcome volatility of renewable energy portfolios. This will contribute to faster integration of renewable energy into the Dutch electricity market. As a supply and installation partner, Rolls-Royce is building the system at North Sea Port's energy hub in Vlissingen-Oost, with a direct connection to the Stedin network. Project Castor is made possible in part by Triodos Bank and Nationaal Groenfonds as financing partners.
Dennis Schiricke (CEO, SemperPower): "We are very proud of this fantastic result! This is an important milestone in the development of our second large-scale battery project, this time even the largest project in the Netherlands. With this project SemperPower underlines its development capabilities, and together with our project partners we play an important role to accelerate the energy transition."
Andreas Görtz (President Sustainable Power Solutions, Rolls-Royce Power Systems): "With our new large-scale battery storage systems that support the integration of renewables into the power supply, we are taking another step with our customers toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. We very much look forward to working with SemperPower on this."
Remko de Bie (Senior Account Manager Energy and Climate, Triodos Bank): "To make optimal use of wind and solar and keep the electricity grid stable, energy storage is a link that should not be missing. Not only does it prevent waste, but polluting gas and coal-fired power plants need to produce less when there is a shortage of electricity. Triodos Bank wants to accelerate the energy transition by giving energy storage a tailwind. The financing, together with the Green Fund, of SemperPower validates our leading ambition in this new market."
Emile Peters (Investment Manager, the National Green Fund): "Sustainable energy storage systems are relatively new. Many financiers then drop out, because they cannot properly assess the risks. The Green Fund, together with Triodos Bank, is now happy to finance precursors like SemperPower, so that they can accelerate the energy transition."
About SemperPower
SemperPower develops, finances, realizes and manages large-scale energy storage systems, and its mission is to accelerate the energy transition. With increasing production of renewable energy, there is an increasing challenge to balance supply and demand in the electricity market. SemperPower's energy storage systems can store renewable energy at times of abundance, and release it at times when the market demands it. It also offers energy traders and power companies the opportunity to support and expand their renewable portfolio. After an investment of Return (www.return.energy) by 2021, SemperPower is ready to develop its significant pipeline of projects.
