Energy storage has many valuable applications within the energy system. The range of applications that energy storage devices can provide is constantly evolving, both because of the ongoing development of new energy storage technologies and because of the evolving flexibility needs of the energy system. The list of storage applications is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. Most storage facilities will need to offer a variety of services to have a robust business case.

Summaries of energy storage applications
These papers provide an overview of the various applications of energy storage, primarily focused on the power system, to highlight the numerous services that energy storage can provide. The forms are organized by the segment of the power system that benefits from a particular service; this categorization does not necessarily reflect the location where the energy storage system is installed. The terms for individual services, as well as their maturity (existing service versus emerging or future service), vary across European Union member states, and are treated accordingly. The overview highlights the services that are technically possible with energy storage. However, not all of these services are currently monitored or tendered in the market, and their market suitability is also categorized.
